It’s that time of year again when our thoughts turn to making New Year resolutions. Some of them you may break before the month is out, but others you may find yourself sticking to in the longer term. If you are not yet sure what sort of changes you would like to make, then Vaughn Pharmacy has got you covered with some helpful suggestions for new year resolutions that will benefit your health!
1 – Get More Rest
One thing that can make a massive difference to your overall health and general wellbeing is getting enough rest. That doesn’t necessarily mean sleeping for more extended periods of time but instead improving the quality of your sleep. If you still feel tired and lethargic even after the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep, then it could be that you are not getting a good quality of rest. It could be worth dropping by Vaughn Pharmacy to discuss sleep tracking and possible sleep disorders.
You can start by trying basic things such as practicing good sleep hygiene:
- Limit daytime naps to 30 minutes or less
- Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine close to bedtime
- Avoid heavy meals, fatty food and spicy dishes close to bedtime
- Establishing an evening routine to help your body and mind recognize that it is bedtime
- Keep the bedroom cool, at around 60 to 67 degrees
- Turn of electronic devices like televisions, cell phones, and computers at least 90 minutes before sleep
2 – Exercise Regularly
Getting enough rest is essential, but so is regular exercise. Improving your fitness level is an excellent choice for a new year resolution, but many people fail early on in the year. The reason for this is usually they are pushing too hard. Nobody needs to go from couch potato to gym bunny in the space of a week! Start off small with mini fitness goals. Even something as simple as pledging to take the stairs instead of the elevator. You don’t need to participate in strenuous exercise as long as you get your heart rate moving. Aim for around 30 minutes of exercise per week. Talk to us at Vaughn Pharmacy if you are interested in using a heart monitor to keep an eye on your heart rate during exercise sessions.
3 – Monitor Your Health
It is always a good idea to take a more pro-active approach to your health. There are lots of ways you can do this, including keeping a closer eye on things like your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Your doctor can monitor these at a scheduled physical, but if you don’t want to visit your doctor, then you can take matters into your own hands and get them checked at your local pharmacy. Did you know blood pressure monitoring and cholesterol checks are among the many services offered by Vaughn Pharmacy?
These are just a few of the new year’s resolutions you could try to improve your overall health and well being during 2018. Don’t forget our friendly pharmacists at Vaughn Pharmacy are always on hand to offer health tips and advice if you have something, in particular, you are concerned about.
