If someone is infected with COVID-19 and they cough, sneeze or even talk, they will spray microscopic droplets of coronavirus into the air. Some people who have been exposed to COVID-19 may never exhibit any symptoms and could be out in public spreading those droplets without ever knowing that they are contagious. That is why people are being asked to wear face masks. Since your face mask covers your mouth and nose, it will help block the release of these potentially infected droplets into the air and slow the spread of the virus. You can purchase a reusable cloth mask from your local pharmacy. These cloth masks will not block COVID-19 completely, but they add an additional layer of protection when coupled with regular handwashing and social distancing.

When Should You Wear a Mask?

The official recommendation from the CDC is that anyone over the age of 2 should wear a mask in public if it is difficult to practice social distancing. An excellent example of this is when inside a store. It is also essential to wear a mask at home if you are sick and others are around you – or if you are caring for someone who is ill. Remember that your mask is to be used in addition to other safety measures and does not replace the need for social distancing and handwashing.

How to Properly Wear a Face Mask

Face masks will only be effective if worn correctly and if they are kept clean. When you purchase a mask at your local pharmacy, it should be sealed in a packet and ready to use immediately. Follow these steps to put your mask on:

  • Wash your hands in soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds
  • Make sure the mask has no holes or tears
  • Fit your mask over your nose and mouth and under your chin securing the loops behind your ears or tying at the back of your head depending on the style
  • Pinch the top edge of the mask around the bridge of your nose
  • There should be very little space between your face and the mask, but you should still be able to breathe normally
  • Once the mask is in place, do not touch it until you wish to remove it
  • Do not slip your mask down away from your nose or mouth at any time

Safely Removing Your Face Mask

When the time comes to remove your mask, try not to touch the front of the mask. This is where any germs will be concentrated. Instead, you should remove the mask by holding the ear loops or ties. Place your used mask into a small plastic bag and seal it until you can wash your mask. After the mask is removed, you should wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more. If you do not have access to water, you can use hand sanitizer as a substitute. This is available to purchase at your local pharmacy.

Your mask must be washed after each use in hot water and detergent then hung up to dry, ready for your next use. If your mask has a removable filter, you will want to remove it and throw it away before washing the mask.

Don’t forget, if you need to stock up on masks for your family, they are available in adult and child sizes at your local pharmacy.
