If there is one thing that is on everyone’s minds lately, it is the current coronavirus outbreak. There is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. Still, it is vital to remain calm and listen to advice about social distancing and self-isolation to slow the spread of the virus. We have already discussed how much of a concern COVID19 seemed to be, but the situation has evolved drastically since then, so let’s take a closer look at the virus.

What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus has been around since the 1960s, although it is unclear exactly where it originated. The name comes from the crown-like shape of the virus. It can affect humans and animals alike, depending on the strain. What you might not realize is that most people have had some form of coronavirus in their lifetime – the common cold belongs to the same family of the virus! However, the current strain of Coronavirus, COVID19, is the one everyone is concerned about. It is the focus of a global pandemic that has spread from China all across the globe.

The symptoms of COVID19 include fever, a persistent dry cough, and shortness of breath. It is a severe acute respiratory syndrome that can be particularly dangerous to the elderly and those with a chronic underlying condition or respiratory illness. While some people may experience coronavirus as a case of the flu, for others, it can be more complicated. It can lead to pneumonia, respiratory failure, and septic shock.

How Does Coronavirus Spread?

Coronavirus mainly spreads from one person to the next. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they can spray droplets as far as 6 feet away. If someone else breathes them in or swallows them, then they will likely contract the virus too. The droplets can also live on surfaces for several hours, and by touching the contaminated surface and then your eyes, nose, or mouth, you can become infected. Some people will carry COVID19 without exhibiting any of the symptoms, but can still spread the virus to other people.

Widespread Transmission is Expected

COVID19 is now considered a global pandemic. The United States is expected to experiences widespread transmission in the coming months. As a result, social distancing measures are in place to help slow the spread. At the time of writing, there had been two deaths in Tennessee, and residents are being urged to stay at home. Anyone who has symptoms of the virus is advised to isolate themselves from others. If you require more information, you can visit CDC.gov/coronavirus or contact the Tennessee Department of Health coronavirus information line at 877-857-2945 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT daily.
