As the warmer weather creeps in and shelter in place orders are relaxed, more of us are likely to be spending time outdoors. Unfortunately, that means an increased risk of stings and bug bites! Why not get prepared to treat these at home with a few essential supplies from your local pharmacy and stop bug bites spoiling your summer!
General Insect Bites
In most cases, the key to treating a general insect bite is just finding a way to ease the pain and reduce the discomfort. This could be as simple as soothing the area with an ice cube or a cold washcloth. If there is any itching associated with the bite, then you may also wish to apply calamine lotion or hydrocortisone ointment, which are both available over the counter from the local pharmacy.
Ticks
One of the most troublesome critters during the summer months are ticks! If you find a tick somewhere on your body, then you will need to remove it very carefully. Get a pair of sterile tweezers from your local pharmacy and grip it near the head before pulling gently and at a steady pace to remove it. If the head remains embedded in the skin, you will need to see a doctor for proper removal. Once a tick is removed, no further treatment for the bite is required, but you should watch for signs of a rash or fever as ticks can spread diseases like Lyme Disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Fire Ants
If you are unfortunate enough to get stung by fire ants, the best thing to do is soak the affected area in some iced water to soothe the burning sensation. You can then take an over the counter antihistamine from your local pharmacy to help soothe your skin. Fire Ant stings may turn into small white blisters the following day, but if you experience swelling, prolonged itching, or a feeling of nausea, you may have had an allergic reaction and will need medical attention.
More Serious Stings & Bites
On some rare occasions, it may be necessary to seek immediate medical attention for insect bites or stings. For example, if you think that you may have been bitten or stung by one of the following bugs or creatures, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

- Brown Recluse Spider
- Scorpion
It is also essential to seek medical attention if any bug bite or sting triggers an allergic reaction, or if the resulting wound becomes infected. If you are unsure if you need medical care, you could consult your local pharmacy for advice.
