It seems like the big topic on everyone’s mind right now is the increasing spread of Coronavirus. However, many experts are saying that Tennessee residents should actually be much more concerned about Flu! So, what exactly is Coronavirus, and how can we protect ourselves against it?

What is Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus that is being widely publicized at present refers to a new strain of the virus originating in Wuhan, China, known as 2019-nCoV. China has reported thousands of cases of the illness across the country and has confirmed that it can spread person to person. Several international locations are now reporting small numbers of confirmed infection – mainly in people who have recently returned from China. The first confirmed case of person-to-person infection of Coronavirus in the United States was reported on January 30, 2020.

The Difference Between Coronavirus & Flu Symptoms

Coronavirus and Flu will both attack the respiratory system, which could lead to confusion between the two. However, there are some critical differences in how they impact the human body, which can help to differentiate between the symptoms. The most common symptoms of Flu include coughing, sneezing, sore throat, aching body, and fatigue. Issues seem more localized to the upper respiratory system. So far this Flu season, over 15 million patients across the United States have been diagnosed with Flu! It is not too late to get a Flu shot or test at your local pharmacy TN.

Coronavirus also affects the respiratory system, with some of the key symptoms being coughing and shortness of breath. In order to be infected, it is necessary to come into direct contact with someone who has Coronavirus. It is worth noting that there are only a handful of confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the United States, and none of those are in Tennessee. At present, Flu presents a much higher health risk to Tennessee residents than the Coronavirus.

Steps to Protect Yourself Against Coronavirus & Other Illnesses

While Coronavirus has been declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organisation, the risk of Tennessee residents contracting Coronavirus is very small. There are steps that individuals can take to slow the spread of the disease. These steps will also help to prevent the spread of other conditions, including Flu and even the common cold.

  • Clean your hands regularly with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, which can be purchased at your local pharmacy TN.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing using a tissue or the crook of your elbow.
  • Avoid coming into close contact with anyone exhibiting cold or Flu-like symptoms.
  • Make sure meat and eggs are cooked thoroughly.
  • Limit unprotected contact with live wildlife and farm animals.

Don’t forget. If you need any advice on health concerns, medications, or first aid, then your local pharmacy TN has a team of qualified pharmacists available at the counter to talk about any concerns that you might have.
